Wrestling with Demons

Sitting in front of the Communion table last Sunday, preparing to serve the Lord’s Supper, the demons’ voices began to whisper in my mind, “Who do you think you are?  You are not worthy to share this.  Do you remember…”  And then the demons listed a long list of sinful moments in my life.  My palms began to sweat, my heart began to race, and my ears began to ring.  The demons were right; I was not worthy of standing before anyone; I was surely not worthy of sharing the Lord’s Supper.  Guilt and shame filled my mind and my heart.

And then looking up behind the choir, there was the big Cross, and another voice came to me, “You are forgiven, you have been forgiven, you will forever be forgiven.  You are worthy, you are loved.”

And then I stood and proclaimed, “This is the body of Christ broken for you.  This is the cup of the New Covenant shared freely for you.  As often as you eat and drink, remember the sacrifice of Jesus and the ever-present love of God.”

You are worthy, you are loved!
